The Acoustic Test Basin (BEA) is exceptional in terms of its size and unique in terms of its use in an open academic environment. The tank is used both for research and industrial work and for student projects, in a wide variety of applications involving the underwater world and, more generally, the aquatic world.
Its volume of approximately 300m3 corresponds to the dimensions :
- Length 8m
- Width 6m
- Depth 7m
It was built in 1985 (for underwater acoustics applications in the 2-200 kHz frequency range and financed half by the Region, half by the DRET (total: 1.6 MF in 1985), the emphasis at the time having been placed on the dimensions of the tank, rather than on its equipment. Initially located in a hangar, it was integrated into the ISEN building when it was extended in 1998, then very recently rebuilt in 2022 in the JUNIA extension (Colson 1 block building).
The water temperature is 14°C. Bacteriological growth is low, with chlorine levels at the level required to eliminate bacteriological growth.
Attached to the IEMN's Acoustics group (also the Acoustics team of JUNIA's TRD Electronique Physique Acoustique), this facility supports research (ANRs and theses) in Underwater Acoustics and in the field of Metamaterials. A permanent JUNIA research engineer ensures that it runs smoothly. With the help of researchers from the Acoustics Team, he hosts, organises and carries out measurement campaigns.
The tank is equipped with sources, hydrophones, amplifiers, preamplifiers, a moving-positioning platform, etc. to enable a wide range of experiments to be carried out in the water.
It is covered by two areas (1.5 m x 8 m) of grating on either side of its width, giving reduced access to the water surface (3 m x 8 m); this grating makes it easier to install equipment above the water.
