Photoacoustic and photothermal techniques exploit dynamical changes of temperature and strain patterns in materials in order to extract structural, thermal and elastic information. In the analysis, typically, the material properties are determined from the time or frequency dependence of the characteristic lengths of the involved thermal diffusion process (i.e., the thermal diffusion length) and acoustic wave propagation (i.e., the acoustic wavelength), which can be assessed from the spatial pattern of the temperature or strain. In this presentation, we illustrate the methodology on a variety of systems, varying from very thin layers used in microelectronics, to complex materials in soft matter physics.
