Seminar : Patterning and deforming soft particles with ultrasonic standing waves

Abstract:

By means of the acoustic radiation force, standing waves of ultrasound can form a 2D microarray to hold dispersed soft particles (for example, microvesicles and cells) in solution. I will explain the mechanisms behind this phenomenon using a potential energy theory. This approach might be helpful for "one cell per well" analysis. Besides being patterned, soft particles can be squeezed by acoustic radiation stresses. I will show how the aspect ratio of the deformed particle can be used to reveal its elasticity.
