Research and sustainability:
towards a new generation of electronics
GDR DEFIE “Electronic Devices with Low Environmental Impact”
Current and future climate and ecological upheavals call for drastic changes in our lifestyles and consumption habits. The issue of sustainability has therefore become unavoidable in practically all sectors of activity. The electronics industry is obviously no exception to this move towards greater environmental and social responsibility. It is in this context that the research group (GDR) “Electronic Devices with Low Environmental Impact” (DEFIE), led by the CNRS Engineering Institute, aims to become a major national player in promoting and supporting this paradigm shift. Indeed, awareness of the challenges associated with the significant environmental impact of the electronics sector calls for the development of innovative solutions more eco-responsible. This GDR therefore aims to contribute to the federation and coordination of scientific communities involved in the major themes of sustainable electronics. DEFIE aims to be a space for exchange, discussion, and collaboration among diverse stakeholders in the eco-responsible electronics sector, including researchers, representatives from the socio-economic world, educational institutions, and students.
It is structured into five closely interrelated thematic groups: (i) processes and materials for circularity, (ii) tools and methods for eco-design and energy efficiency, (iii) versatility, (iv) disruptive approaches, and (v) economic and societal aspects. The collective intelligence mobilized within DEFIE thus enables this highly interdisciplinary issue to be addressed with great ambition. Finally, DEFIE wishes to play a role in the training sector and communicate with the general public. IEMN is heavily involved in running DEFIE.
