Ce besoin est ressenti \u00e0 tous les niveaux de la fabrication du composant, depuis l\u2019\u00e9pitaxie jusqu\u2019au packaging du produit final en passant par les proc\u00e9d\u00e9s de fabrication en salle blanche. L\u2019acteur principal dans cette course de haut niveau est la fili\u00e8re silicium qui, par la grande maturit\u00e9 de sa technologie, arrive \u00e0 faire un effort consid\u00e9rable sur la miniaturisation du composant tout en \u00e9tant tr\u00e8s limit\u00e9e par les propri\u00e9t\u00e9s physiques du mat\u00e9riau. Ceci pr\u00e9sente une grande opportunit\u00e9 pour les semiconducteurs III-V qui offrent un choix tr\u00e8s vari\u00e9 de binaires (InP, GaAs, GaN, AlN, InAs, InSb, GaSb, InN\u00a0\u2026\u2026) avec des propri\u00e9t\u00e9s \u00e9lectriques et optiques d\u00e9passant largement celles du mat\u00e9riau historique. Dans le domaine de la micro\u00e9lectronique, cette famille de mat\u00e9riaux est utilis\u00e9e principalement pour les transistors HEMTs (High Electron Mobility Transistor) et HBTs (Heterojunction Bipolar Transistor) qui sont, de nos jours, en t\u00eate de course vers le seuil symbolique du Tera-Hertz.
