av-av_dropcap1-3cd9da5fea0ef5fb27aee617571c39a3'>T<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"\">ow-Power Wide Area Networks (LPWAN) play a key role in the IoT <\/span><span class=\"\">marketplace wherein LoRaWAN is considered a leading solution.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"\">Despite the traction of LoRaWAN, research shows that the current\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"\">contention management mechanisms of LoRaWAN do not scale.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"\">We address contention on LoRaWAN by introducing FLIP, a fully\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"\">distributed and open architecture for LoRaWAN that fundamentally\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"\">rethinks how LoRa gateways should be managed and coordinated.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"\">FLIP transforms LoRa gateways into a federated network that provides\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"\">inherent support for roaming while tackling contention using\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"\">consensus-driven load balancing.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"\">FLIP offers identical security guarantees to LoRaWAN, is compatible with\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"\">existing gateway hardware and requires no updates to end-device hardware\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"\">or firmware.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"\">These features ensure the practicality of FLIP and provide a path to its\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"\">adoption.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"\">FLIP delivers scalable roaming and improved contention management in\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"\">comparison to LoRaWAN.<\/span><br class=\"\" \/><br class=\"\" \/><span class=\"\">These benefits are achieved within the resource constraints of cheap\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"\">conventional LoRa gateways and requires no server hardware, allowing\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"\">anyone
