En pleine r\u00e9daction de l\u2019HDR (Habilitation \u00e0 Diriger des Recherches), l\u2019occasion est propice pour revenir sur son parcours d\u2019enseignant-chercheur en mettant en lumi\u00e8re certains faits saillants de son histoire, tout en abordant la trajectoire de la recherche en thermo\u00e9lectricit\u00e9 \u00e0 l\u2019IEMN.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u00ab\u00a0Les plus grandes barri\u00e8res sont souvent dans notre t\u00eate, elles n\u2019existent pas vraiment. Il ne faut pas cloisonner les choses dans son esprit, il y a tant d\u2019id\u00e9es re\u00e7ues notamment sur la recherche acad\u00e9mique et l\u2019industrie\u00a0\u00bb.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>C\u2019est le <strong>credo<\/strong> qui a toujours guid\u00e9 Jean-Fran\u00e7ois jusqu\u2019\u00e0 pr\u00e9sent. Cette r\u00e9flexion fond\u00e9e sur une conviction personnelle et, on le comprendra, sur des exp\u00e9riences \u00e9prouv\u00e9es, peut bien s\u00fbr s\u2019appliquer aux jeunes dipl\u00f4m\u00e9s ou aux jeunes chercheurs, h\u00e9sitants quant \u00e0 leur carri\u00e8re. Le hasard faisant bien les choses, alors qu\u2019il est en classe pr\u00e9paratoire aux \u00e9coles d\u2019ing\u00e9nieurs, il d\u00e9couvre sur une plaquette les programmes du <\/span><a style=\"font-size: 1.235em;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/url?sa=t&amp;rct=j&amp;q=&amp;esrc=s&amp;source=web&amp;cd=1&amp;cad=rja&amp;uact=8&amp;ved=2ahUKEwiMy4vV3OTdAhWhzoUKHVxNBBQQFjAAegQICRAB&amp;url=http:\/\/www.magistere-physique.u-psud.fr\/&amp;usg=AOvVaw2Z4xgmSvRAM0Kiyli2Fymc\">Magist\u00e8re de Physique fondamentale d\u2019Orsay<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 1.235em;\"> qui le font r\u00eaver\u00a0: m\u00e9canique quantique, physique statistique, \u00e9lectromagn\u00e9tisme, \u2026 Sans h\u00e9siter, il fonce et ressort trois ans apr\u00e8s, en 2004, avec un double dipl\u00f4me Master-Magist\u00e8re\u00a0! Il l\u2019a v\u00e9cu intens\u00e9ment comme \u00ab\u00a0une p\u00e9riode tr\u00e8s stimulante\u00a0\u00bb.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00ab\u00a0Paris-XI est un endroit tr\u00e8s sp\u00e9cial, entre les collines arbor\u00e9es sont nich\u00e9s tant de laboratoires prestigieux \u2026 si bien que personne n\u2019en fait une affaire et on ne se rend pas compte tout de suite du tr\u00e8s haut niveau de la recherche qui y est men\u00e9e.\u00a0\u00bb<\/em> (Jean-Fran\u00e7ois)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Un stage de fin d\u2019\u00e9tudes l\u2019oriente durablement vers le vaste champ des micro- et nanotechnologies. Il travaille alors \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9tude et \u00e0 la caract\u00e9risation m\u00e9canique de mat\u00e9riaux (m\u00e9taux, di\u00e9lectriques, semi-conducteurs) rentrant dans la composition des circuits int\u00e9gr\u00e9s notamment en collaboration avec l\u2019industrie micro-\u00e9lectronique (ST Microelectronics). Il en garde le souvenir d\u2019un dispositif exp\u00e9rimental avec \u00ab de la belle physique \u00bb, ce qui lui donne envie de faire une <strong>th\u00e8se en micro-\u00e9lectronique<\/strong>, sous la direction d\u2019Arnaud Devos, chercheur CNRS \u00e0 l\u2019<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?sa=t&amp;rct=j&amp;q=&amp;esrc=s&amp;source=web&amp;cd=1&amp;cad=rja&amp;uact=8&amp;ved=2ahUKEwjeg_OnjJjgAhW3DmMBHYhCAEwQFjAAegQIABAD&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.isen.fr%2F&amp;usg=AOvVaw34-tICpQVpfFa5unU-gwn1\">ISEN\/IEMN<\/a>. Plut\u00f4t que de changer de laboratoire, il change de sujet, op\u00e9rant \u00ab une mobilit\u00e9 th\u00e9matique \u00bb en direction des cristaux phononiques, dans une approche cette fois plus th\u00e9orique.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Il se forme alors \u00e0 son nouveau sujet \u00e0 l\u2019\u00c9cole Centrale de Lille pendant un an aupr\u00e8s d\u2019Olivier Bou Matar dans l\u2019\u00e9quipe Aiman-Films. Cette \u00e9quipe est notamment sp\u00e9cialiste des mat\u00e9riaux magn\u00e9tostrictifs, une propri\u00e9t\u00e9 couplant le magn\u00e9tisme et l\u2019acoustique. En 2010, cela d\u00e9bouche sur un article qui est aujourd\u2019hui assez bien repris.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u00ab Avec l\u2019\u00e9quipe, nous avons propos\u00e9 un concept d\u2019accordabilit\u00e9 en fr\u00e9quence via le champ magn\u00e9tique, donc sans contact, des cristaux phononiques. \u00bb<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Cette p\u00e9riode marque v\u00e9ritablement le d\u00e9but de sa carri\u00e8re de chercheur, lui fournissant de longues perspectives de recherche. Le travail d\u2019expertise sur les cristaux phononiques porte vite ses fruits puisque Jean-Fran\u00e7ois, part un an (2009-2010) aux \u00c9tats-Unis en tant que <strong>Research Associate dans le d\u00e9partement de Materials Science and Engineering<\/strong>, sp\u00e9cialis\u00e9 dans son domaine, <strong>en Arizona \u00e0 l\u2019Universit\u00e9 de Tucson<\/strong>. C\u2019est alors l\u2019occasion pour lui de mat\u00e9rialiser cette th\u00e9matique porteuse sous la forme de plusieurs articles et de se former \u00e0 l\u2019encadrement de doctorants. L\u2019approche est nouvelle puisque seuls deux papiers pionniers font \u00e9tat de telles propositions qui ne demandent qu\u2019\u00e0 \u00eatre d\u00e9velopp\u00e9es.<br \/>\nJean-Fran\u00e7ois formule alors un <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?sa=t&amp;rct=j&amp;q=&amp;esrc=s&amp;source=web&amp;cd=&amp;ved=2ahUKEwiPxqD1hafqAhVK8OAKHSJZCOIQFjAAegQIARAC&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Ferc.europa.eu%2Fstarting-grants&amp;usg=AOvVaw0XbomELAW3xQ28yFc6x_nC\">projet Starting Grant<\/a> aupr\u00e8s de l\u2019<a href=\"https:\/\/www.horizon2020.gouv.fr\/cid72629\/erc.html\">ERC<\/a> (European Research Council) qui d\u00e9marre en 2013. L\u2019id\u00e9e est d\u2019explorer ce nouveau domaine dont le potentiel de d\u00e9veloppement est \u00e9vident mais la faisabilit\u00e9 pas gagn\u00e9e d\u2019avance ! En effet, il s\u2019agit, ni plus ni moins, de r\u00e9ussir \u00e0 transformer le silicium en un mat\u00e9riau thermo\u00e9lectrique, ce qu\u2019il n\u2019est pas naturellement en raison d\u2019une conduction thermique tr\u00e8s \u00e9lev\u00e9e. Ce projet, tr\u00e8s exp\u00e9rimental, n\u00e9cessitant la fabrication et la caract\u00e9risation d\u2019objets s\u2019attaque aussi \u00e0 des questions tr\u00e8s fondamentales. Par ailleurs, il a permis d\u2019\u00e9tablir des <strong>collaborations fructueuses notamment avec le Centre de Thermique et d\u2019\u00c9nerg\u00e9tique de Lyon<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/cethil.insa-lyon.fr\/\">CETHIL<\/a>).<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>L\u2019IEMN a acquis une exp\u00e9rience dans ce domaine <em>via<\/em> trois m\u00e9thodes : \u00e9lectrothermique, thermom\u00e9trie Raman et microscopie thermique en Champ proche. Le mariage entre les micro-nanotechnologies et le thermique a d\u00e9bouch\u00e9 sur un projet <strong>ANR<\/strong> collaboratif <strong>TIPTOP<\/strong> pour d\u00e9velopper de nouveaux d\u00e9tecteurs sensibles pour la microscopie thermique.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Le bilan du projet ERC, termin\u00e9 en 2019, est positif : six th\u00e8ses soutenues, trois post-doctorats financ\u00e9s, une dizaine d\u2019articles publi\u00e9s et communications orales et cinq conf\u00e9rences invit\u00e9es, \u2026 Cette bonne moisson a permis le d\u00e9marrage de nouvelles activit\u00e9s. En particulier, Jean-Fran\u00e7ois travaille aujourd\u2019hui sur l\u2019<strong>optimisation thermique dans des m\u00e9moires non-volatiles \u00e0 changement de phase<\/strong> (PCRam) toujours dans le cadre du Laboratoire Commun. Par ailleurs, <strong>deux projets ANR<\/strong> vont d\u00e9marrer en <strong>2021<\/strong>, l\u2019un s\u2019int\u00e9ressant au transport de chaleur dans le r\u00e9gime quantique et l\u2019autre aux transferts thermiques dans les interfaces m\u00e9tal-semiconducteur.
