Deposition of organic thin films

The resource has a dedicated room whose main activity is the functionalization of surfaces for molecular electronics (junctions, switches, diodes, memories, sensors...) or nanobiotechnologies. In particular, the technique of self-assembled monolayers (SAM) allows to give surfaces specific physicochemical properties. The synthesis and grafting of nanoparticles on different substrates is also performed. The laboratory can perform synthesis under inert atmosphere and purification of solvents and organic compounds.

Two connected gloveboxes allow all the manufacturing steps of a component to be carried out under an inert atmosphere: surface chemistry, deposition of molecules or polymers by spin-coating, as well as evaporation of organic species and metallization under ultra-high vacuum.

Deposits of organic thin films under vacuum are also proposed (parylene, pentacene,...).

Deposits of organic thin films under vacuum are also proposed (parylene, pentacene,...).

- Functionalization of various surfaces (metals, semiconductors, polymers, nanoparticles...) by the technique of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs), in order to bring them new properties (electronic conduction, variable wettability such as superhydrophobicity, specific reactivity, photosensitivity, ...). Grafting or self-assembly of nanoparticles / nanomaterials is also performed on various surfaces

1. Self-assembled monolayer applied to the preparation of a sarin gas sensor (NCM group) [Ref]

Multi-step chemical synthesis of molecules, polymers, nanoparticles, or other materials applied to electronics. The laboratory has many equipments useful for the synthesis and purification of organic compounds (rotavapor, column chromatography, Buchi distillation/sublimation oven, centrifuge...)

2. Molecular junction based on self-assembled photocommutable molecules on a gold surface (NCM group) [Ref]

- Grafting or assembly (self-assembly, coating) of nanoparticles/nanoobjects on various surfaces.

3. Optical switch consisting of a 2D array of gold nanoparticles (NPSANs) functionalized with photocommutable ligands (NCM group) [Ref]

- CVD deposition in a Comelec Frame of parylene C and N in thin layer of about 50nm to 25µm (with or without adhesion promoter). Parylene is used for its high chemical inertness (component encapsulation) and its electrical insulating properties.

4. Flying object mimicking the insect (OVMI) made from a film of parylene C (Mamina group)

Expertise and know-how: other

- Manipulations under inert atmosphere. Air-sensitive chemistry can be performed under glovebox or using vacuum manifolds (schlenk glassware available). Two coupled gloveboxes allow to perform under inert atmosphere (O2 and H2O <1 ppm) all the manufacturing steps of a component: surface chemistry, molecules or polymers deposition by spin-coating as well as evaporation of organic species and then metallization under ultra-high vacuum (by Joule effect at 10-7 mbar).

- Joule effect vacuum deposition of organic or inorganic layers (pentacene, sexiothiophene, triphenyldiamine, C60, Ag2S) in an Aprim Vide frame.

- Physicochemical characterizations of molecules, polymers, nanoparticles by UV-vis, FTIR or RMN spectroscopies on campus.

- Physicochemical characterizations of functionalized surfaces by ellipsometry, contact angle measurement, spectroscopy (UV-vis, FTIR, XPS), voltammetry and mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS accessible on campus).
